Design is the most underpriced part of most custom cake orders. Here's a simple framework for pricing design complexity — and a system for applying it consistently.

Why design complexity is the hardest thing to price

A 25-serving 2-tier cake can take 3 hours or 12 hours depending on the design. Yet many bakers price primarily on servings and tiers — which means they dramatically underprice complex orders. The client asking for a hand-painted galaxy fondant cake with sugar florals and gold leaf pays the same as the client asking for a simple buttercream with sprinkles. That's not a sustainable pricing model.

The 4-tier design complexity framework

CakeQuote uses four preset complexity levels. You assign a fixed fee to each level in your pricing settings. When creating a quote, you select the level that best matches the design — and the fee is applied automatically.

Simple

Clean, minimal design. Smooth buttercream finish or simple fondant. Basic piped borders. No complex techniques. Typical time: 1–2 hours of decorating.
Suggested fee: $0–$20 (sometimes the base price already covers this)

Standard

Rosettes, basic flowers, textured buttercream, simple fondant cutouts, two-tone finish. Most birthday cakes fall here. Typical time: 2–3 hours.
Suggested fee: $25–$50

Detailed

Intricate piping, fondant figures, ruffles, painted details, fresh flowers arrangement, multiple techniques combined. Typical time: 3–6 hours.
Suggested fee: $60–$100

Premium

Sugar flowers, sculpted figurines, hand-painting, gold leaf, 3D elements, multi-technique showcase cakes. Wedding and high-end event cakes. Typical time: 6–12+ hours.
Suggested fee: $120–$200+

How to use this in CakeQuote

Open Settings and set your fee for each of the four complexity levels. When you create a quote, click the complexity level that best matches the design — the fee populates automatically. You can always override the fee manually for unusual orders.

How to explain complexity pricing to clients

Don't say "design fee." Say "design complexity level: detailed — this covers the 5–6 hours of hand work required for the florals you've requested." When clients understand what they're paying for, they rarely push back on it.
